Oysters Don't Just Produce Pearls, They Help the Habitats Around Them.
Oysters are responsible for housing and producing the beautiful pearls used in your most cherished pearl jewelry, but did you know oysters also play a vital role in filtering and removing excess nutrients like nitrogen from the water and that they grow in reefs that provide habitats for crabs and fishes? They create habitats by crafting three-dimensional reefs with many nooks and crannies.
The Oyster Recovery® Partnership's Work and Mission are Transparent Due To Annual Progress Reports.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: "Scientists working for ORP® help with restoration efforts by mapping potential restoration areas and track the progress of restored reefs. They also identify reefs in the tributaries that can already be described as healthy and restored." ORP provides Annual Reports Detailing Their Restoration Efforts Completed.
The Bay's oyster population has tripled just in the past 20 years. ORP's 2025 Annual Report marked a defining year for ORP. In September, the Oyster Recovery® Partnership wrapped up a decade-long effort of restoration that resulted in 2,400 acres of oyster reefs in Maryland Virginia being restored.
Oyster Recovery® Partnership - Shell Recycling Alliance™
In 2014, ORP® signed the Chesapeake Bay Agreement. Since that was signed, ORP®'s Shell Recycling Alliance™ (SRA) has recycled 360,000 bushels of oyster shell from more than 200 restaurants in the Chesapeake Bay region.

SINCE THE ALLIANCE'S LAUNCH IN 2010, ORP HAS RECYCLED NEARLY 135,000 BUSHELS, WHICH EQUATES TO 4,700 TONS OF SHELL KEPT OUT OF AREA LANDFILLS, AND ENOUGH SUBSTRATE TO SUPPORT THE PLANTING OF UP TO 675 MILLION OYSTERS IN LOCAL WATERS.
